On Sunday, we took a drive to The Storm King Art Center. The weather was perfect to be walking through the gentle hills which make up the vast grounds of the center. It is only in this uncrowded outdoor landscape that the many enormous iron and steel pieces by Lieberman, Di Suvero and Calder are best displayed. The dozens of contemporary and abstract pieces are carefully erected and placed strategically to best create a whimsical adventure for the visitor.
We were amazed with the precision to which Mark Di Suvero assembled his towering steel girder pieces placing the components together with such careful balance, that they would actually sway and turn in the breeze. We also had fun with the animated and comical pieces from Calder on his Calder Hillside.
It was a little challenging to take good photographs as the sun was at an absolute zenith directly overhead with no light angle. We would like to go back and photograph in the Autumn and in the Winter snow, but the center closes in Late October.
